Drawing Inspiration from Cult Media: Tributes and Homages in Dog Mendonca & PizzaBoy [GIVE-AWAY & DEV BLOG #2]
*** For a chance to win the fan package shown below, all you need to do is post a comment on this blog. The raffle ends on Sunday, May 8, at 23:59 CET. ***
Here we go with our second dev blog for The Interactive Adventures of Dog Mendonca & Pizza Boy. As addressed yesterday, the team behind the game drew a lot of inspiration from oldschool point-n-click adventures; with Tim Schaefer’s The Secret of Monkey Island being one title that sticks out above everything else. “I remember having backgrounds of Monkey Island as color key references for some of the scenes and such”, says Santiago Villa. And Filipe Melo adds that “Monkey Island has one of the best scripts ever and a very original sense of humor”. Especially the latter is also a key ingredient of The Interactive Adventures of Dog Mendonca & PizzaBoy – while playing the game, you will have hilarious conversations with whacky characters non-stop and solve one ridiculous riddle after another.
If you don't recognize the Hitchcock classic that inspired the look and feel of the Motel Romero location, you better take some extra lessons in fright flick trivia. ;)
Besides everybody’s favorite video games of yore, the cult films of the past had another huge impact on the look and feel of The Interactive Adventures of Dog Mendonca & PizzaBoy. While the Hotel Romero location brings up fond memories of the Bates Motel in Psycho, the China Town environment reminds us a lot of Big Trouble in Little China. At one point, the game does even pay direct homage to one of the most infamous trash flicks ever made – Howard the Duck. When you visit and explore the over 30 hand-made locations in The Interactive Adventures of Dog Mendonca & PizzaBoy, you are strongly recommended to keep your eyes open. Identifying all the hilarious tributes to pop and nerd culture, which the authors and designers placed in almost every setting, is just as much fun as following the gripping, supernatural narrative.
