From Comic Book to Video Game: The Making of The Interactive Adventures of Dog Mendonca & PizzaBoy [DEV BLOG #1]

Hey there, monster fans! We hope you all followed last week’s release of The Interactive Adventures of Dog Mendonca & PizzaBoy on the App Store with great interest. We at Deep Silver FISHLABS, as well as our friends over at OKAM Studio in Argentina, are happy that our lil’ oldschool adventure can now be played “on the go” as well. In our opinion, its beyond-belief narrative is simply too much fun to be withheld from you and rest of the monster-loving mobile gaming crowd. But not only the game itself is exciting. Also its realization is a tale well worth telling. After all, The Interactive Adventures of Dog Mendonca & PizzaBoy marks one of the few cases where a game based on a graphic novel was realized not only with but also by the makers of the underlying comic. Sure, you will find a lot of other games on the App Store, which are based on graphic novels. But rarely did the guys responsible for the source material play such a key role in the making of the respective app as Filipe Melo (writer) and Santiago Villa (colorist) did in the realization of The Interactive Adventures of Dog Mendonca & PizzaBoy.

The makers of the Dog Mendonca comics: Santiago Villa (colorist), Juan Cavia (designer), Martin Tejada (script doctor) and Filipe Melo (author).

As lifelong fans of point-n-click adventures, both Filipe and Santiago were excited by the idea of having their beloved comic books translated into a video game that follows along the lines of the most popular digital pastimes of their teenage years. These were, of course, the classic Sierra and Lucas Arts adventures. The right partner for this ambitious undertaking was quickly found with Buenos Aires-based OKAM Studio. They do not only have an impressive track record throughout all platforms, but also employ Santiago Villa, who gave the Dog Mendonca comics their distinct coloring, as art director. Together, the makers of the comics and the producers of the game set up a successful Kickstarter campaign to finance their project. In a second step, they teamed up with Koch Media subsidiaries Deep Silver FISHLABS and Ravenscourt to get the finished product published on global scale.

Having debuted on Windows PC as Steam download and boxed product in early March of 2016, The Interactive Adventures of Dog Mendonca & PizzaBoy is now available for purchase on the Apple App Store, too. As a premium game, the one-time purchase of the app via http://bit.ly/dogmendonca-iOS unlocks all content and chapters. So whatcha waiting for? Grab the game, rack your brains and come back to this very place tomorrow when we come to talk about all the cool tributes and homages to pop and nerd culture, which the developers have sneaked into the app. In the meantime, feel free to post your feedback or questions in the comments!
